Background of the Study

Continuous professional education (CPE) is essential in ensuring that healthcare professionals, including psychiatric nurses, remain updated with the latest medical knowledge, skills, and best practices. In mental health care, ongoing education helps nurses improve patient outcomes, enhance diagnostic accuracy, and adopt evidence-based interventions (World Health Organization, 2024). Research indicates that psychiatric nurses who engage in CPE demonstrate higher levels of competency, confidence, and job satisfaction (Adeyemi & Hassan, 2024).

In Nigeria, psychiatric nursing remains a critical yet underdeveloped field, with many nurses lacking access to specialized training. In Bauchi State, where mental health services are scarce, psychiatric nurses often work under challenging conditions, managing complex psychiatric disorders with limited resources (Olawale & Musa, 2023). Without continuous education, nurses may struggle to provide high-quality care, leading to poor patient outcomes, medication errors, and increased burnout (Garba & Sanni, 2024).

Despite the recognized benefits of CPE, little research has been conducted on its impact on psychiatric nursing performance in Bauchi State. Understanding how CPE influences psychiatric nurses' effectiveness can inform policies aimed at improving mental healthcare services.

Statement of the Problem

The quality of psychiatric care in Bauchi State is often hindered by inadequate training, outdated knowledge, and limited professional development opportunities. Many psychiatric nurses do not receive sufficient continuous education due to financial constraints, lack of institutional support, and limited access to training programs (Williams & Yusuf, 2024). As a result, psychiatric nurses may struggle to provide evidence-based care, impacting patient safety and treatment outcomes.

There is a need to assess whether continuous professional education enhances the performance of psychiatric nurses, improving patient care and reducing mental health-related complications. If CPE proves beneficial, efforts should be made to expand training programs and make them more accessible. This study investigates the impact of CPE on psychiatric nursing performance in Bauchi State, identifying barriers and recommending solutions.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To evaluate the impact of continuous professional education on the performance of psychiatric nurses in Bauchi State.
  2. To identify challenges psychiatric nurses face in accessing and applying continuous professional education.
  3. To propose strategies for improving continuous professional education for psychiatric nurses.

Research Questions

  1. How does continuous professional education affect the performance of psychiatric nurses in Bauchi State?
  2. What challenges do psychiatric nurses face in accessing and applying continuous professional education?
  3. What strategies can improve continuous professional education for psychiatric nurses?

Research Hypotheses

H₀: Continuous professional education does not significantly improve the performance of psychiatric nurses in Bauchi State.
H₁: Continuous professional education significantly improves the performance of psychiatric nurses in Bauchi State.

H₀: Psychiatric nurses do not face significant challenges in accessing and applying continuous professional education.
H₁: Psychiatric nurses face significant challenges in accessing and applying continuous professional education.

H₀: Implementing new strategies will not enhance continuous professional education for psychiatric nurses.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study focuses on psychiatric nurses in Bauchi State and the impact of continuous professional education on their performance. It examines the effectiveness of ongoing training, barriers to professional development, and potential solutions. Limitations include variations in training availability, differences in institutional support, and the potential influence of external factors on nursing performance.
